USAGE

+ In English, we make heavy use of the present progressive when describing activities that we are in the process of doing. In French, the simple present will always be used.

Je lis un livre. / I am reading a book.

+ The simple present in French is also used to express actions that you are doing in the near future.

Je pars demain à l'école. / I leave tomorrow for school

+ The French and English present are used in the same way to express habitual actions and universal truths.

Ma famille adore le camping. / My familly likes camping.

1. Verbs of the first group

The verbs of the first group are all those that end in -er in the infinitive, except aller.

• Je veux chercher une chemise. (I want to look for a shirt)
• Elle peut chanter bien. (She can sing well)

The verbs of the first group verbs are regular conjugation verbs. To conjugate verbs of the first group in the present tense, we replace -er ending with the endings corresponding to the subjects: -e (je), -es (tu), -e (il/elle), -ons (nous), -ez (vous), -ent (ils/elles).

• Chanter (v): sing

Je chante	Nous chantons
Tu chantes	Vous chantez
Il/Elle chante	Ils/Elles chantent

• Regarde (v): watch

Je regarde	Nous regardons
Tu regardes	Vous regardez
Il/Elle regarde	Ils/Elles regardent

2. Verbs of the second group

The verbs of the second group are all those that end in -ir in the infinitive.

• L’arbre va grandir très vite. (The tree will grows very fast)
• Je veux finir à 11h. (I want to finis at 11h)

The verbs of the second group verbs are regular conjugation verbs. To conjugate verbs of the second group in the present tense, we replace -ir ending with the endings corresponding to the subjects: -is (je), -is (tu), -it (il/elle), -issons (nous), -issez (vous), -issent (ils/elles).

• Finir (v): finis

Je finis	Nous finissons
Tu finis	Vous finissez
Il/Elle finit	Ils/Elles finissent

• Choisir (v): choose

Je choisis	Nous choisissons
Tu choisis	Vous choisissez
Il/Elle choisit	Ils/Elles choisissent

3. Verbs of the third group

The verbs of the third group verbs are all verbs that do not belong to the first or second group. In the third group there are a lot of irregular verbs.

• Verbs whose infinitive ending is dre are conjugated as follows: ds (je), -ds (tu), -d (il/elle), -dons (nous), -dez (vous), -dent (ils/elles).

• Vendre (v): sell

Je vends	Nous vendons
Tu vends	Vous vendez
Il/Elle/vend	Ils/Elles vendent

 

⚠️ Exceptions:   Prendre (take): Nous prenons, Vous prenez, Ils/Elles prennent

                                         Coudre (sew): Nous cousons, Vous cousez, Ils/Elles cousent

• Verbs whose infinitive ending is tre are conjugated as follows: ts (je), -ts (tu), -t (il/elle), -tons (nous), -tez (vous), -tent (ils/elles).

• Mettre (v): put

Je mets	Nous mettons
Tu mets	Vous mettez
Il/Elle met	Ils/Elles mettent

• Verbs whose infinitive ending is ir (no rules like in the second group) are conjugated as follows: s (je), -s (tu), -t (il/elle), -ons (nous), -ez (vous), -ent (ils/elles).

• Courir (v): run

Je cours	Nous courons
Tu cours	Vous courez
Il/Elle court	Ils/Elles courent

 

⚠️ Exceptions : Servir (serve): Je sers, Tu sers, Il/Elle sert, Nous servons, Vous servez, Ils/Elles servent

• Verbs whose infinitive ending is cevoir are conjugated as follows: çois; -çois; -çoit; -cevons; -cevez; -çoivent.

• Percevoir (perceive): Je perçois, Tu perçois, Il/Elle/On perçoit, Nous percevons, Vous percevez, Ils/Elles perçoivent

• Verbes whose infinitive ending is eindre, -aindre and oindre take the following ending:

• • Les verbes -eindre : -eins; -eins; -eint; -eignons; -eignez; -eignent
  • Les verbes -aindre : -ains; -ains, -aint; -aignons; -aignez, -aignent
  • Les verbes -oindre : -oins; -oins; -oint; -oignons; -oignez; -oignent

• Craindre (fear): Je crains, Tu crains, Il/Elle craint, Nous craignons, Vous craignez, Ils/Elles craignent

• The verbs offrir, ouvrir, souffrir and cueillir are conjugated like the verbs of the first group.

• Some commonly used irregular third group verbs:

                      ÊTRE : Je suis, Tu es, Il/Elle est, Nous sommes, Vous êtes, Ils/Elles sont

                      AVOIR : J’ai, Tu as, Il/Elle a, Nous avons, Vous avez, Ils/Elles ont

                      ALLER : Je vais, Tu vas, Il/Elle va, Nous allons, Vous allez, Ils/Elles vont

                      POUVOIR : Je peux, Tu peux, Il/Elle/On peut, Nous pouvons, Vous pouvez, Ils/elles peuvent.

                      VOULOIR : Je veux, Tu veux, Il/Elle/On veut, Nous voulons, Vous voulez, Ils/elles veulent

                      FAIRE : Je fais, Tu fais, Il/Elle fait, Nous faisons, Vous faites, Ils/Elles font

                      DIRE : Je dis, Tu dis, Il/Elle dit, Nous disons, Vous dites, Ils/Elles disent

                      VOIR : Je vois, Tu vois, Il/Elle voit, Nous voyons, Vous voyez, Ils/Elles voient

                      PLEUVOIR : Il pleut, Ils pleuvent
