Marseille - French City

Learn about the people, history, and attractions of Marseille, one of the biggest French cities.

Marseille is a big city located in the south of France. It is the capital of the Bouches-du-Rhône département. Located near the Mediterranean sea, Marseille is one of the biggest ports in that region. It has a population of about 880,000 people, as of 2024.

History

Marseille has an ancient lineage—it was founded by the Phoceans (originating from the Greek city of Phocea) around 600 BC. As a result, it stands as one of Europe’s oldest cities. Throughout its existence, Marseille has fiercely guarded its independence. Even after falling to Julius Caesar’s troops in the 1st century BCE, it maintained its status as a free city.

People

The trading port founded by Greeks from the city of Phocaea about 600 BCE was to attract both settlers and visitors. The first of these account for a heterogeneous population and the second for services designed to cater to seamen and merchants.

Marseille's population is very diverse. It experienced a wave of immigrants from former European colonies, such as North African countries. As a result, it faces problems such as unemployment and racial hostility. The city boasts many Christian churches, mosques, and synagogues.
